Dr. Tim McMahon, Department of Defense Director for the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System (AFMES), helps Norma Clarke, a family member of missing in action (MIA) U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Fred Clarke, with paperwork before giving a family reference sample during the 2023 Vietnam War Annual Government Briefing (AGB) in Washington, D.C., June 30, 2023. The AFMES team partners with Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) to allow family members of MIAs to provide family reference samples for use in identifying unaccounted-for U.S. service members. DPAA provides periodic updates and hosts annual government briefings for families of Americans who are missing from past conflicts. These events include formal presentations, question and answer sessions, and case summary discussions designed to keep family members informed of DPAA’s mission to account for those still missing while addressing their individual needs.
