U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Ian Pass, a platoon sergeant with Battalion Landing Team 2/1, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, conducts a communications check in preparation for an airfield assault exercise aboard the amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA-6), July 2, 2023. BLT 2/1 was tasked with capturing an airfield in support of the Air Combat Element’s forward arming and refueling point. The 31st MEU is operating aboard ships of the America Amphibious Ready Group in the 7th Fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with allies and partners and serve as a ready response force to defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
