Lt Col William J. “Diamond Jim” Daley was Eagle Squadron Spitfire pilot in No. 121 Squadron of the RAF, and commanded the 335th Fighter Squadron of the 4th Fighter Group overseas in Great Britain in late 1942 before he returned Stateside to join the leadership of the 371st Fighter Group in 1943 as Group Operations Officer. He later served as the group’s Deputy Commander from May to September, 1944 when he was killed during a combat mission in an accidental collision accident from a P-47 landing behind him during a recovery at a forward operating location in France.
