The executive officer of Pacific Missile Range Facility, Cdr. Kacee Jossis, (foreground) attends the Ka Mauikiʻikiʻi O Ke Kauwela (Summer Solstice) event at Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF), Barking Sands, Hawaii, with Commanding Officer Capt. Brett Stevenson, June 21, 2023. The annual Summer Solstice ceremony with Native Hawaiian lineal descendants is held to honor the ancestors and lay to rest the iwi kūpuna (ancient bones) found over the past year at the installation. Situated in coastal western Kauaʻi, PMRF contains ancient burial sites. Climate change and storm and tidal surge conditions have resulted in a shifting landscape that reveals the iwi kūpuna. PMRF cultural experts work in consultation with the lineal descendants in accordance with Native Hawaiian traditions and customs on the most appropriate path forward, whether in reburying the remains or conducting an archeological process to inter the remains at the crypt.
