NEWPORT, R.I. -- Vice Adm. Hiroshi Egawa, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), President, JMSDF Command and Staff College, visits President of the U.S. Naval War College (NWC) Rear. Adm. Pete Garvin on board Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island July 24, 2023. During the visit Vice Adm. Egawa met with NWC’s leadership and JMSDF students before attending a command brief and touring various academic departments. Vice Adm. Egawa has held his current assignment as President of the JMSDF Command and Staff College since December 2022. Established in Yokosuka, Japan in 1954 before relocating to Tokyo in 1956, the JMSDF Command and Staff College serves as the highest educational institute in the JMSDF and promotes the ethos of “academic freedom”, “self-enlightenment”, and “logical thought from a broad perspective” in achieving their goals in the fields of military education and research.
Established in 1884, NWC informs today’s decision-makers and educates tomorrow’s leaders by providing educational experiences and learning opportunities that develop their ability to anticipate and prepare strategically for the future, strengthen the foundations of peace, and create a decisive warfighting advantage.
