230712-N-SE686-1001 MCAS IWAKUNI, Japan (Jul. 12, 2023) Equipment Operator 3rd Class Matthew Metzger, guides Equipment Operator 3rd Class Dalton Smith, both assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Three (NMCB) 3, in loading an MK30 Dump truck in support of the MCAS Iwakuni Cap and Close Landfill Project. The MCAS Iwakuni Cap and Close Landfill project consist of capping a 13-acre landfill by excavating and relocating waste outside landfill boundary lines to within the boundary lines, installing an interim cover system, constructing all temporary storm water and erosion control features, and maintaining clearing and grubbing operations to facilitate base grass cutting operations in order to reduce Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard (BASH). NMCB-3 is forward deployed throughout the Indo-Pacific region and United States territories to support and maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific. As the stand-in, crisis response, naval engineering force, NMCB-3 maintains a ready posture to deliver in-theater expeditionary logistics via expeditionary shore infrastructure, forward damage repair, and mobile construction.
