U.S. Army National Guard Lt. Col. Steffan Asper attaches a campaign streamer to the 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry (Mountain) guidon recognizing the unit's service during Operation Allies Refuge. The Secretary of the Army directed the Meritorious Unit Citation to the 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry, (Mountain) for exceptional service in support of the retrograde operation from Afghanistan, Operation Allied Refuge, at the Hamid Karzai International Airport, and Operation Allies Welcome. The battalion withdrew United States and partner nations forces from Afghanistan, resulting in the largest evacuation of non-combatants in U.S. military history.
