A memorial remembers fallen Airmen assigned to Alaska Air National Guard 249th Airlift Squadron and U.S. Air Force 517th Airlift Squadron at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, July 27, 2023. On July 28th, 2010, a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III cargo aircraft assigned to the 3rd Wing, crashed shortly after take-off during a local training mission. The four crew members on board were killed in the crash; Majors Michael Freyholtz and Aaron Malone, pilots assigned to the Alaska Air National Guard’s 249th Airlift Squadron, Capt.
