U.S. Air Force Col. Tom Sodeman, a gastrointestinal specialist at the University of Toledo Medical Center and an F-16 flight doctor assigned to the Ohio National Guard’s 180th Fighter Wing, poses in front of a photo of Toledo, Ohio native Admiral Alane Duerk, a U.S. Navy nurse, July 20, 2023 at U.S Naval Hospital Okinawa, Japan. Duerk served onboard the USS Benevolence treating wounded soldiers, and later liberated allied prisoners of war, off the shores of Japan during WWII. Durek earned her nursing degree from the Toledo Hospital School of Nursing, in 1941, before joining the U.S. Navy. Approximately 30 members of the 180FW Medical Group are working at the hospital as part of Comprehensive Medical Readiness Program (CMRP) training requirements and to assist with patient care throughout various sections of the hospital. The 180FW Medical Group Airmen conduct daily training in realistic environments and circumstances to ensure they maintain the highest level of proficiency and readiness for worldwide deployment.
