Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Cadet Lucas Gum, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District intern, stands on the deck of the vessel Padre Island, during a tour Aug. 2, 2023. The Padre Island is a “suction hopper dredger” and is currently contracted to dredge parts of Galveston Channel. Gum is a college junior and toured the Padre Island as part of his month-long internship at the Galveston District. Gum, from Troy, Ill., attends St. Louis University where he studies aviation and aeronautical science. Gum chose the Galveston District internship because of his interest in engineering.
