    U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Carlos A. Ruiz, the 20th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, and Sgt. Maj. Troy E. Black, the 19th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, stand at attention for the pass and review during the relief and appointment ceremony at Marine Barracks Washington, August 10, 2023. During his 30-year career, Sgt. Maj. Ruiz has served in a variety of billets and completed several overseas deployments including combat operations in Iraq in 2003 and two combat deployments to Afghanistan with 1st Marine Division. The post of Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps was established in 1957 as the senior enlisted advisor to the Commandant of the Marine Corps, the first post of its kind in any branch of the Armed Forces.
