U.S. Army Soldiers from the 104th Aviation Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Pennsylvania National Guard, conduct a simulated rescue operation of a crashed UH-60 Blackhawk during Exercise Northern Strike 2023 in Grayling, Michigan, Aug. 10, 2023. The pre-accident plan rehearsal, which has a closely guarded date and start time to create additional realism and stress, also involves local first responders.
Northern Strike is one of the National Guard’s largest joint, readiness producing exercises, held annually at Michigan’s National All-Domain Warfighting Center, which consists of Camp Grayling, the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center, the Battle Creek Air National Guard Base, the Selfridge Air National Guard Base and other training areas. This year’s exercise will involve approximately 7,000 personnel consisting of Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, Special Operations Forces, Emergency Response Teams and allies/foreign partners from 65 military units, 13 States and four countries.
