Mario Tharpe, the director, writer, and producer of the documentary "Fighting on Both Fronts: The Story of the 370th" listens to the 8th Infantry Illinois National Guard Association scholarship presentations on Aug. 12 at the General Jones Armory.. The 8th Infantry was renamed the 370th Infantry Regiment for World War I where they fought under the French because of systemic racism in the U.S. Army at that time. Today the lineage and honors of the 8th Infantry Regiment is with the Illinois Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment based in the General Jones Armory on Chicago's South Side. The 8th Infantry was first deployed to the Spanish-American War on Aug. 13, 1898 - 125 years ago this year. The unit would go on to serve in both World War I and World War II. The Victory Monument at the intersection of 35th Street and Martin Luther King Drive in Bronzeville on Chicago's South Side honors the unit's World War I service.
