230727-N-SE686-1003 MCAS IWAKUNI, Japan (Jul. 27, 2023) Cmdr. Travis Brinkman, left, commanding officer of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 3, receives a project brief from Equipment Operator 2nd Class Nickolas Vowels, Project Supervisor, on MCAS Iwakuni Cap and Close Landfill. MCAS Iwakuni Cap and Close Landfill project consists of capping a 13-acre landfill by excavating and relocating waste outside landfill boundary lines to within the boundary lines, installing an interim cover system, constructing all temporary stormwater and erosion control features, and maintaining clearing and grubbing operations to facilitate base grass cutting operations in order to reduce Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard (BASH). NMCB-3 is forward deployed throughout the Indo-Pacific region and United States territories to support and maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific. As the stand-in, crisis response, naval engineering force, NMCB-3 maintains a ready posture to deliver in-theater expeditionary logistics via expeditionary shore infrastructure, forward damage repair, and mobile construction.
