Michael Jewell, chief of the Regulatory Division for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District, briefs the Board of Directors of the San Joaquin Area Flood Control Agency and the public about the USACE Regulatory Program on August 17, 2023 in Stockton, California. His briefing highlighted the continued coordination on the permit the district issued for the Smith Canal Gate. The Smith Canal Gate is an element of the Lower San Joaquin River Project and is intended to reduce flood risk in the Stockton area. Jewell and other USACE employees traveled to Stockton to keep the board informed of the district’s progress on the Lower San Joaquin River Project and other collaboration efforts.
