Lt.j.g. Mark Humes, strike officer aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) and native of Pascagoula, Mississippi, was chosen to act as Officer of the Deck for the final inbound transit to his hometown. The Officer of the Deck is ultimately responsible directly to the commanding officer for the safe navigation of the ship.
