Severn Stevens, the commanding officer of the amphibious transport dock ship USS Green Bay (LPD-20), exchanges gifts with a member of the Indonesia National Armed Forces during a welcome ceremony for Super Garuda Shield 2023, in Surabaya, Indonesia, Aug. 30, 2023. The ceremony contained traditional Indonesian performers and allowed U.S. Navy Sailors and U.S. Marines, with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, to exchange gifts with members from the Indonesia National Armed Forces. Super Garuda Shield 2023 (SGS2023) is an annual exercise that has significantly grown in scope and size since 2009. SGS2023 is the second consecutive time this exercise has grown into a combined and joint event, highlighting the seven participating and 12 observing nations' commitment to partnership and a free and open Indo-Pacific.
