Descendants of 1st Sgt. Robert Pinn stand near the dedication plaque at his namesake armory following a reopening ceremony for the facility in Stow, Ohio, May 8, 2023. From left, Pinn’s great-great-great granddaughter Shannon Holland, and great-great granddaughters Karen Mitchal, Marsha Malone and Linda Blanton, travelled to Ohio from Virginia and Georgia for the ceremony. The facility was memorialized at the time of construction in 1974 for Pinn, a Massillon, Ohio native, who was awarded the Medal of Honor while serving with Company I, 5th United States Colored Troops at the Battle of Chaffin’s Farm, Va. on Sept. 29, 1864. Pinn was one of only four African American Soldiers from Ohio to receive the Medal of Honor during the Civil War.
