Corrina Marquez-Burns and Carlos Marquez Jr. receive their grandfather Pvt. Juan Candelaria Marquez’s Army service medals from Maj. Gen. Dana J.H. Pittard, commanding general 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss, during a ceremony at Fort Bliss, Texas, Dec. 7. On Dec. 11, 1944, five days before the Battle of the Bulge, Juan Marquez was hit by a German tank and suffered broken ribs and a shoulder injury near Woelfling, France, but he quickly recovered from his injuries and returned to combat.
