U.S. Marines with Battalion Landing Team 2/1, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, and Japan Ground Self-Defense Force soldiers, with 1st Amphibious Rapid Deployment Regiment, participate in a rehearsal of concept for a multi-lateral amphibious assault during Super Garuda Shield 2023 aboard the amphibious transport dock ship USS Green Bay (LPD-20), in the East China Sea, Sept. 9, 2023. The rehearsal of concept allowed both Marines and JGSDF soldiers an opportunity to integrate and exercise emerging warfighting concepts with allies and partners. Super Garuda Shield 2023 (SGS2023) is an annual exercise that has significantly grown in scope and size since 2009. SGS2023 is the second consecutive time this exercise has grown into a combined and joint event, highlighting the seven participating and 12 observing nations' commitment to partnership and a free and open Indo-Pacific.
