Staff Sgt. Madison Stoner-Dixon, med lab tech, completes a cognitive test while wearing a functional near-infrared spectroscopy, or fNIRS, system in the Air Force Research Laboratory, or AFRL, Neural Interfaces Lab at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, May 19, 2023. The fNIRS measured brain activity via cerebral blood flow as Stoner-Dixon completed the Multi-Attribute Task Battery, a pilot tracking task. Researchers with the AFRL Human Effectiveness Directorate compared various commercial brain-machine interface devices, including fNIRS, to enhance decision superiority and performance in Airmen and Guardians.
