A hasty and deliberate Combat Application Tourniquet is applied to a Connecticut Army National Guard soldier, simulating a casualty, during a mass casualty exercise, part of annual training, at Fort Drum, New York, Aug. 11, 2023. Hasty tourniquets are applied at the point of injury, high up on an extremity and over the casualty’s clothes, to immediately prevent major blood loss after being wounded. Deliberate tourniquets are applied in a safer location, usually at the casualty collection point, to further prevent blood loss. These tourniquets are placed two to three inches directly above the wound and directly on the skin. (U.S. Army photo by Sgt. Matthew Lucibello)
