Great Lakes, IL. The NAVFAC PWD Environmental Division (PWD-EV) reports a successful nesting season for the common tern colony at Naval Station Great Lakes. The common tern is listed as a species of concern by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and as endangered in the state of Illinois. This colony is the only remaining nesting colony in the state and continues to face many challenges each nesting season, including fluctuating lake levels, habitat degradation, and predation. NAVFAC PWD-EV has been working with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) since 2000 for the protection and conservation of this species and in recent years has anchored three floating nesting platforms in the harbor to add nesting habitat and protection from predation. During 2023, thanks to partnerships with IDNR and U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS), the Environmental Division is excited to report 39 surviving chicks from the colony. This is the highest number of chicks fledged since 2003 and a significant increase from zero surviving in 2022 due to predation. NAVFAC PWD-EV looks forward to supporting the conservation of this species and the collaboration with partner agencies in the future.
