After the wreath-laying ceremony in honor of National POW/MIA Recognition Day, Kelly McKeague, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency Director (third from right), views the 'To What Remains' documentary, which follows Project Recover's journey to search for Americans missing in action since World War II at the U.S. Navy Memorial's Burke Theatre in Washington, D.C., Sept. 15, 2023.

President Jimmy Carter established this day in 1979 through a proclamation to honor and recognize the sacrifices of Americans who have been prisoners of war (POW) and remind the nation of those still missing in action (MIA). The nation observes this event every year on the third Friday of September, honoring POW and MIA service members.
