A Dutch paratrooper recovers his parachute after conducting an airborne operation alongside Allied paratroopers in commemoration of the 79th anniversary of Operation Market Garden as part of Falcon Leap 23 on Ginkelse Heide drop zone, Netherlands, Sept. 16, 2023.
Operation Market Garden was one of the largest airborne operations of World War II and in American history which was aimed at liberating the Netherlands and gaining a foothold into Nazi Germany by crossing the Maas, Waal, and ultimately the Rhine River.
Falcon Leap is NATO's largest technical airborne exercise where approximately 1,000 paratroopers from 12 countries all over the world perform daily paratroop and/or air drops whilst training with each other’s equipment for two weeks. The exercise gives paratroopers the opportunity to train together and learn from one another, preparing them to operate in collaboration with each other.
The 173rd Airborne Brigade is the U.S. Army's Contingency Response Force in Europe, providing rapidly deployable forces to the United States European, African, and Central Command areas of responsibility. Forward deployed across Italy and Germany, the brigade routinely trains alongside NATO allies and partners to build partnerships and strengthen the alliance.
