U.S. Army Reserve Sgt. 1st Class Edward Cuevas, the communications team chief with the 773rd Civil Support Team, 7th Mission Support Command demonstrates decontamination procedures on a simulated wounded soldier alongside soldiers from the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (FAR,) Salvage and Rescue Unit during a CBRN demonstration at the Port of Agadir, Morocco, Jun. 9, 2023, part of African Lion.
Cuevas integrated with the FAR’s mass casualty decontamination team for the duration of the joint mission. “I was honored to work with the MCD,” said Cuevas. “We received casualties, quickly and systematically removed contaminated garments, washed, rinsed and monitored them for chemical contamination before sending them for medical triage or evacuation. This is a very important phase in the CBRN event response process as it mitigates cross-contamination between effected casualties and the medical staff and general population.”
The 773rd is a technical HAZMAT reaction team, the only one of its kind in the U.S. Army Europe - Africa theater. Exercises like African Lion provide a venue to flex U.S. Army Reserve capabilities and demonstrate the integral role the Reserve plays in the success of unilateral military operations across the globe. 18 nations and approximately 8,000 personnel will participate in African Lion 2023, U.S. Africa Command's largest annual combined, joint exercise that will take place in multiple countries to include Morocco from May 13 - June 18, 2023.
