The annual ceremony is held to recognize the base’s history, legacy, importance and the commemoration of the official dedication of Camp Pendleton. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the installation Sept. 25, 1942, in honor of World War I Maj. Gen. Joseph H. Pendleton, who had long advocated the establishment of a West Coast training base.
