From the left, U.S. Air force Tech. Sgt. Edward Kim, medical surgical nursing unit noncommissioned officer in charge; Capt. Ji Yang, MSNU element lead; and Staff Sgt. Angelina Lee, allergy and immunization technician, all from the 51st Healthcare Operations Squadron, wrap a simulated patient's leg during a mass casualty training event at Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea, Sept. 21, 2023. MASCALs are situations in which a large number of casualties or injured individuals occur simultaneously, often as a result of a single incident or event, such as natural disasters, terrorist attacks, military engagements or major accidents. If not properly prepared, MASCALs can overwhelm medical resources; they require specialized training and protocols to effectively manage and treat the injured. The medics prepare daily for any contingencies if and when they occur, with the priority being ready to fight tonight.
