(Sept. 21, 2023) Mr. Ivor Mollena, an underwater archeologist with Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), discusses with a group of historians the cultural importance and Navy's recovery efforts of the USS Maine in the early 1900s after its explosion in Havana harbor, Cuba, after his essay titled “The Maine Submerged: An Underwater History” was recognized to be part of the McMullen Naval History Symposium. NHHC's Underwater Archaeology Branch manages the Navy's collection of over 17,000 ships and aircraft wrecks worldwide under the Sunken Military Craft Act, including the USS Maine. The symposium, hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy History Department, is a world-renowned event held biennially to highlight the latest research on naval and maritime history from academics and practitioners all over the globe.
