Capt. Marco S. Weijman, Royal Netherlands Air Force, receives the U.S. Army's Meritorious Service Medal, presented by U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Michael C. McCurry, U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and Fort Novosel commander, and Kajsa Ollongren, Netherlands Minister of Defense, at the home of U.S. Army Aviation, Fort Novosel, Ala., Sept. 28, 2023.
Weijman was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for actions taken as an instructor pilot with the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence's 1st Battalion, 223d Aviation Regiment at Fort Novosel, where he preformed lifesaving actions upon recognizing that his student pilot was unresponsive and unable to control the UH-72 Lakota helicopter during a night vision goggle training flight. He immediately took the controls of the aircraft, declared an emergency, and safely landed the helicopter in a position for rapid support from emergency services. (U.S. Army photo by Lt. Col.
