USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) returns to Naval Station Norfolk Dec. 20 following a regularly scheduled deployment to the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility. The homecoming marks the end of the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group’s (IWOARG) deployment, where its ships supported Operation Enduring Freedom, Exercises African Lion, Eager Lion and International Mine Countermeasure Exercise 2012, and conducted Maritime Security Operations (MSO) and theater security cooperation efforts in the Mediterranean and Arabian Seas. Iwo Jima ARG's deployment marked the maiden deployment of USS New York - a ship made from 7 1/2 tons of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center.
