The honorees gather for a picture with Harold Bray, the last surviving crew member of the USS Indianapolis, during San Francisco Fleet Week (SFFW) 2023. Bray endured days and nights in the open sea, witnessing the deaths of his fellow shipmates after the USS Indianapolis was hit by a Japanese submarine attack, causing the ship and its crew of 1,195 Sailors to sink. Nearly 900 Sailors survived the initial attack but only 316 were rescued after four days and 5 nights. SFFW is an opportunity for the American public to meet their Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard teams and experience America’s sea services. During fleet week, service members participate in various community service events, showcase capabilities and equipment to the community, and enjoy the hospitality of the city and its surrounding areas.
