JACKSONVILLE, FL. (September, 18, 2023) Lt. Cmdr. Megan King, a certified nurse midwife at Naval Hospital Jacksonville, uses a tape measure to determine fetal height on a maternity patient. It is a non-invasive assessment for fetal growth. The patients’ stomach is measured from the pubic bone to the top of the uterus, and the measurement in centimeters should correspond to the number of pregnancy weeks. King, a native of Rochester, Minnesota, holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Minnesota University and says, “The term ’midwife’ is derived from Old English and translates to ‘with woman’, which is the core of midwifery. We stand beside and empower women not only through pregnancy and birth but through all stages of life. I love providing this care for our patients and am honored to take part in such incredible moments in their lives.” National Midwifery Week is Oct. 1 - 7.
