A book titled, “Firefighter’s Busy Day,” written by Maria Bostian, a writer and fire and life safety educator, sits on a desk before being read to children during a read-along session with Sparky the Fire Dog, the mascot for the National Fire Protection Association, at the Harriotte B. Smith Library on Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Oct. 12, 2023. Annually, Sparky, along with members of the Camp Lejeune Fire and Emergency Services Division, visit libraries across MCB Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River to teach fire safety for younger generations. This year’s campaign, “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention,” works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe when cooking.
