Lt. Cmdr. Ian Wood, executive officer aboard the forward deployed Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Cowpens (CG 63) watches a target through binoculars as the ship fires its Mk. 45 Mod 2 5-inch gun during an exercise. Cowpens is part of the George Washington Carrier Strike Group, the US Navy's only forward deployed carrier strike group based out of Yokosuka, Japan and is currently conducting a routine Western Pacific patrol.
