U.S. Army Capt. Matthew Brown, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) team leader, briefs Michelle Outlaw, U.S. Embassy Chargée d’ Affaires, on the missing service member that is being searched for during a recovery mission site in Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Oct. 17, 2023. DPAA personnel work alongside Lao citizens throughout the recovery mission by transferring the excavated soil and looking through the soil for aircraft wreckage, life support material and possible osseous material. Since 1985, the United States and Lao governments have worked closely together to find and recover unaccounted-for personnel. There are currently 1,578 missing and unaccounted-for Americans from the Vietnam War, of which 288 are believed to be in Laos. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. David Owsianka)
