This #FortRileyFriday we continue our look at buildings that were built to support activities on both the historic Cavalry and Artillery Posts.
Building 307 at the corner of Carter and Holbrook Avenues was built in 1900.
Constructed from native limestone bldg. 307 was first used as an ordnance storehouse. This area of Main Post between and to the south of the Cavalry and Artillery Posts is referred to in historic terms by the Army Corp of Engineers as the Quartermaster Supply Service District. The buildings in this area served their respective functions in support of both posts.
Today, building 307 continues to serve in two very different ways. The Public Works Self Help School is located on the upper level. There, Soldiers learn tasks such as how to properly submit service and work orders, repair holes in drywall and perform minor plumbing and electrical repairs to help keep their unit's buildings up to date on maintenance. The lower level houses the local office of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), the largest federal employee union. Workers at virtually every federal agency depend upon the union for legal representation, legislative advocacy, technical expertise and informational services.
