The Independence-variant littoral combat ship USS Augusta (LCS 34) hosts service members from the Navy’s 8th Naval District during a port call in Mazatlán, Mexico, Oct. 25, 2023. USS Augusta, the U.S. Navy’s newest littoral combat ship, commissioned in Eastport, Maine, on Sept. 30 and is sailing to its future homeport of San Diego. As part of Littoral Combat Ship Squadron 1, USS Augusta is a fast, optimally-manned, mission-tailored surface combatant that operates in near-shore and open-ocean environments, winning against 21st-century coastal threats.
