U.S. Navy Corpsman Second Class Matthew Shaw, a Ludowici, Georgia native and field medical service technician with 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2d Marine Division, poses for a photo aboard the USS New York, Nov. 14, 2023. Growing up as a second generation immigrant and having a father in the Army influenced Shaw the most to join the military.
"What really influenced me to join the military is the fact that I'm a second generation immigrant," said Shaw. "And my dad originally, in his hometown the only two options was working as a painter or selling drugs."
Originally wanting to join the Marine Corps as a combat medic, Shaw was unaware the Marine Corps does not have their own medical field. Once aware the Navy provided what he was searching for, Shaw went straight to a Navy recruiter.
"As soon as I found out the Navy was the organization that provides the Marine Corps their medical capabilities, I enlisted in the Navy that day," said Shaw.
Since joining in 2018, Shaw continues to pass on his knowledge and experience to his junior corpsman.
"The more confident you are in your abilities the better you're going to be as a corpsman."
