Shad Kane, a cultural practitioner with the Oahu Council of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, presents a kahili to a participant during the Kapuakaikaula Makahiki November 18, 2023, at Rainbow Bay Marina near Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. Makahiki is an ancient Hawaiian celebration dedicated to Lono, the god of welfare, agriculture and health; to give thanks for nature’s gifts received from land and sea. The Makahiki at Pearl Harbor started because of Shad Kane’s work representing the Native Hawaiian Community on consultations for the Ford Island Master Development Plan.
