U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division, currently deployed to Poland, celebrate their unit’s 106th birthday while singing the Dog-faced Soldier during a cake-cutting ceremony and festivities on Forward Operating Site Bolesławiec, Poland, Nov. 21, 2023. The 3rd ID was activated at Camp Greene, North Carolina, on Nov. 21, 1917. During World War I, as a member of the American Expeditionary Force to Europe, the Division earned its name as the “Rock of the Marne,” when surrounding units retreated, the 3rd Infantry Division remained. These U.S. Soldiers are deployed as part of rotational forces to Poland to support multinational training and operations to enhance interoperability and contingency response capabilities with allies and partners.
