From 21 June through 8 August 2023, Southern Methodist University (SMU), partner of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), conducted excavations in an effort to find U.S. aircrew lost over Palau during World War II. In the photo, local worker Rickton Selbart assists SMU team members in cutting and removing thickly matted fern which was up to two meters thick in order to reach the ground surface at the crash site of a WWII-era fighter aircraft in Palau, June 25, 2023 (Photographer Dr. Mark McCoy with SMU).
