Service members assigned to The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) and Marines assigned to 2d Battalion, 2d Marine Regiment, 2d Marine Divine, Bn callsign Warlords Regiment perform a repatriation ceremony in honor of the recovered remains of military personnel at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam, Hawaii, Dec. 22, 2023. The remains of these unknown personnel recovered from various regions in Tarawa will undergo an examination for possible identification at DPAA. The Battle of Tarawa was the first amphibious battle in the pacific during World War II. A Japanese admiral said it would take one million men 100 years to claim the island, 18,000 Marines accomplished this in three days. This year marks the 80th anniversary since the conflict.
