Soldiers from the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) and the U.S. Army Band, “Pershing’s Own” conduct military funeral honors with funeral escort for U.S. Army Capt. George Terry in Memorial Section H of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., Dec. 1, 2023. This was a memorial service as Terry's remains were never recovered.
On Nov. 15, 1950, Terry was a passenger on board U.S. Army Tug LT-636 while it was towing a barge towards Wonsan Harbor, North Korea. During the tow, the tug struck a mine killing many of the crew aboard the tug and tossing others into the water. LT-636 sank within twenty minutes, which allowed some survivors to climb aboard a life raft and set out for shore while others climbed aboard the barge. Terry was thrown into the water and while he was wearing a life jacket, swift currents carried him away from the lifeboats and rescue efforts failed to locate his body. Only nine men survived the incident.
Terry joined the U.S. Army from New York and served during WWII and Korean War. For his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Terry’s son, William Pierce, received the U.S. flag from his father’s funeral service.
