    U.S. Soldiers with the 1-178th Field Artillery Battalion (FA BN), 678th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 263rd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, South Carolina Army National Guard, celebrate the Saint Barbara’s Day Ball, Dec. 3, 2023, Columbia, South Carolina. The legend of St. Barbara as she is known to be the patron saint of artillerymen, a day that those celebrate and amongst the 1-178th FA BN which have a rich history and share the same pride and devotion to community service as a citizen-soldier that their forefathers displayed when they followed the “Swamp Fox” Francis Marion into the swamps of the low-country of South Carolina, helped “The Gamecock” Thomas Sumter at the High Hills of Santee, and stood with Andrew Pickens at the Battle of Cowpens. Retired U.S. Army Master Sgt. Frankie “Mo” Baldwin was guest speaker, whom served as 1-178th Field Artillery Battalion master gunner in 2021, and retired in 2023. Baldwin was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his exceptional service. Retired U.S. Army Sgt. Maj. Roger Cantley, and Retired U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Steve Lambert were inducted to The Ancient Order of Saint Barbara, an award that is chosen for an elite few whose long-term dedication to the field artillery has embodied the spirit, dignity and sense of sacrifice and commitment epitomized by Saint Barbara.
