U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Elijah David, assigned to United States Army Japan protection office, and Sgt. 1st Class Shun Sato, a member of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Military Police, exchange medals to symbolize the respect and friendship built during Yama Sakura 85 at Camp Sendai, Japan, Dec. 9, 2023. As a part of U.S. Army Pacific's Operation Pathways, the 43rd iteration of Yama Sakura exercise, YS-85, is the first U.S. Army, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, and Australian Army command post exercise based in Japan. For over forty years, this exercise has demonstrated a continued commitment by both the United States and Japan to work together as dedicated allies in support of the U.S.-Japan security treaty and for continued peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.(U.S. Army photo by Spc.
