PWD Rota Crews and UCT 1 Collaborate for Precision Underwater Lift Operation

ROTA, Spain - Weight Handling Equipment crewmembers assigned to Public Works Department (PWD) Rota, Spain work with divers from Underwater Construction Team (UCT) 1, Dec. 6, 2023, to conduct an underwater salvage lift for a paint float barge that capsized at Naval Station (NAVSTA) Rota Pier 2. PWD Rota, UCT 1, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 133, and NAVSTA Rota Port Operations coordinated the salvage operations, which involved careful dismantling of the aluminum tier structure underwater, employing lift bags to raise parts afloat, and utilizing PWD Rota’s 115-ton crane to raise the submerged 26,000 lbs. aluminum tier structure. The Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Europe Africa Central (EURAFCENT) oversees seven Naval Public Works Departments across three U.S. Combatant Commands.
