A life dedicated to hard work and perseverance!
After the flu epidemic of 1918 shut down his high school, a young Arleigh A. Burke braved a blizzard (by sleeping in a horse barn) to take his congressman's competitive exam for entry to the Naval Academy. When Midshipman Burke graduated in 1923, the Naval Academy did not award bachelor's degrees for completion, instead graduates applied for "P.G." or postgraduate work. In 1931, he earned his Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Rear Admiral Burke became the 15th Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) in 1955.
