A Sonoran pronghorn from the captive breeding pen on the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge is caught and examined by a veterinarian during the annual capture and release on Dec. 12, 2023. After the pronghorn are captured, blood and fecal samples are taken and vaccinations are given; new pronghorn also receive ear tags and radio collars. Sonoran pronghorn tend to overheat easily due to stress, once their body temperatures exceed 104 F, they are doused in water until their temperatures go back to normal.
