Walter Reed National Military Medical Center

Finalized in November of 2023, the design of the unit coin was created at the request of unit leadership to help increase morale by offering a unique coin to recognize exceptional contributions and support made by staff and distinguished visitors.
The coin supports the unit’s vision to be the first choice for our staff as the world’s premier military medical center and encourages the demonstration of our unit’s values: patient-centeredness, professionalism, inclusion, teamwork, respect, and trust.
The front of the coin features the majestic and historic “Tower” landmark, recognized throughout the world. The purple color in the border is taken from the Walter Reed logo and represents our commitment to provide the highest level of care and service regardless of uniform color. Inside the border is a gold trim in an Art Deco style, characteristic of the wrought-iron work that is a distinct part of the tower architecture. The red, white, and blue shield with thirteen stars is adapted from the seals of the President and Congress. It symbolizes Walter Reed’s role as the President’s Hospital, while “The President’s Hospital” written in the sky clearly articulates this honored designation. The shield is flanked by laurel leaves, a symbol of healing.
The back of the coin features the “The Unspoken Bond” sculpture by Peter Wilde which has been prominently displayed at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center since 1995 (then National Naval Medical Center). The American flag is a symbol of Walter Reed’s service to our nation. It’s bounded by a continuous gold trim, signifying Walter Reed’s unwavering commitment to healing and the continuum of patient care. The purple outer border reminds us that we achieve our mission of “Healing Our Nation’s Heroes” through the cooperation of medical and support personnel from multiple uniformed services, government civilian employees, and contract staff, which is summed up in our staff motto, “One Team.”
